Years have passed since the central Chilean ski destinations of Portillo and the Three Valley’s have seen such a strong Autumn for snowfall. It’s no surprise really as the forecast since March has been for a big start of the season. Somebody buy the Chilean weather service a cerveza. They nailed it!
April came in with a roar. There was a bit of high pressure in mid-May, but by Memorial Day Weekend, the storms were back with 1-2 feet of new snow on the ground. Enough for one resort to open 6 weeks earlier than in 2015.
El Colorado, the closest ski destination to Santiago was first to open for the 2016 ski season. Opening day, June 1st, was a powder day and 3 lifts operating. By the afternoon the resort was socked in once again with moderate snowfall. As of June 3rd another 3 feet has added to the base.
La Parva and Valle Nevado Resorts Set to Open
Neighbors of El Colorado, La Parva and Valle Nevado have now announced their opening dates. La Parva, which generally takes longer to open due to their exposure to the wind and rocky terrain has received 4 feet at the base over the past 2 days and more expected into Saturday. La Parva opens June 9th, 2016.
Valle Nevado will quickly follow opening Friday June 10th. Valle is claiming over a meter of snow as of mid day today with another 2-3 feet potentially falling from the sky over the next 2 days.
Maybe it’s time to reconsider your summer vacation plans and head south to La Parva. Learn more about the resort on our review page.
Valle Nevado snowfall pictures
Valle Nevado offers 3 hotels in the 3-4 star range. Rooms are still available for June to September. PowderQuest also has a range of guided tours visiting Valle Nevado for day trips with certified ski guides to take advantage of the massive out of bounds potential. Come explore with us this summer.
What’s the Deal with Portillo?
Portillo has actually seen the most snow out of this storm. The road is closed with over 7 feet at the hotel. Portillo has set their 2016 opening date to June 18th and despite the huge snow coverage, they most likely will stick with the plan. For now we can only dream and stare at this photo until they dig out and open the doors!
