The Andean snow quality is often compared to a mix of coastal snow packs similar to Whistler, BC, with dry "cold smoke" powder found in ski areas and resorts in Utah.

July to mid September is the best bet to snowboard and ski powder in the Andes.  August vacation ideas?  Ski season runs from mid June to mid October with backcountry ski touring options pushing well into November, especially on the Chilean Volcanoes and southern Patagonia with fantastic spring and corn snow cycles.
