Afternoon update from this mornings report below – As of 3:45 PM local time in Bariloche, Cerro Catedral is now reporting 2 feet (60 cm) at the base and 4 feet (120 cm) at the top. All of this has fallen in the past 24 hours. This is a strong system. Route 40 south to El Bolson and Esquel is closed due to heavy snow.
July 17, 2015 – Patagonia’s Cerro Catedral, just over 12 miles from downtown Bariloche is receiving a heavy blast of snow. The resort is official reporting as of 10:18 this morning; 15 inches at the base and over 30 inches on the upper mountain with moderate to strong winds. Most of the ski area has been temporarily closed due to heavy snow on the power lines knocking out electricity and avalanche risk. According to Snow-Forecast.com, another foot of snow could fall by tonight, just in time for the arrival of our guided 8-day Argentina Snow Adventure.
In Bariloche, heavier wet snow has accumulated in town with reports of up to 6+ inches in parts of the city this morning. Road crews are busy clearing the roads for the busy weekend ahead as school holidays have begun in Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. Bariloche also received snow earlier in the week as seen in the picture below.
