Weather and Snow Reports South America

Weather and Snow Forecasts for Chile and Argentina

Weather Forecasts in the Andes of Chile and Argentina are not up to par with North America and Europe, however a few weather websites focusing on South America tend to do a good job giving you an idea of what weather to expect upon your ski and snowboard trip to the Andes.

Snowfall in the Andes

Keep in mind that weather and snowfall vary greatly from Portillo and Las Lenas to Patagonia due to their distances.

Generally large Pacific storms make landfall in Patagonia and the Lake District of Chile dumping snow for days on  Pucon, Cerro Bayo, Bariloche and San Martin de Los Andes, and then on to Lonquimay and Termas de Chillan and working their way North towards Valle Nevado and Portillo over a period of days. Generally if it is raining in Santiago, Chile, it is snowing in Valle Nevado and Portillo and often Las Lenas.

Fair Warning

Several big name ski websites have attempted to post snowfall reports from Ski Resorts in South America.  They have been terribly inaccurate!  One site in 2007 said Catedral in Bariloche, Argentina had not received any snow in over 30 days as of mid-August.  In reality, the ski resort had received fresh snow consistantly most of the month.  Beware of these sites and do your research!
