On May 1, 2014 Chile will join a group of 37 countries that are a part of the US visa waiver program. Which is very exciting but what that really means in the world of tourism is the dropping of an entry fee (the Chile reciprocity fee) upon arrival for both Chilean’s visiting the US and US citizens visiting Chile.
Previously when you would arrive to SCL (Santiago, Chile) airport from a foreign country you would get off the aircraft and go wait in a reciprocity fee line where a clerk would collect $160 USD from each person, that’s almost $650 dollars for 4 people! With this new program in act US citizens will now be able to skip the Chile reciprocity fee line and head directly to customs.
Unfortunately this rule does not apply to Australians whom are still obligated to pay an entry fee. Currently the reciprocity fee for Australia is $100. Keep in mind these amounts do change from time to time.
